POST-SURGERY ADVICE

You have undergone a minor surgery in your mouth, it is important to follow these guidelines to minimize the risk of complications and to ensure a faster recovery.

IN THE NEXT 24H TO 48H:

  • DO NOT SMOKE
  • DO NOT TOUCH THE WOUND
  • DO NOT EXERCISE WITH TOO MUCH INTENSITY FOR ONE WEEK

PAIN
In days following the dental surgery, some pain is to be expected. The pain’s intensity may vary depending on the person as well as the surgery that was performed. Your dentist prescribed and/or recommended some painkillers for you to minimize pain.

SWELLING
You may experience some swelling and bruising around the site of the surgery. Within the first 24 hours, place ice on the affected side of the face – ice should be applied for about 20 minutes each hour, this will help reduce the swelling. If you had a bone graft, it is normal to have swelling.

MOUTH CARE
Perform your oral hygiene as usual (do not touch the wound). Your mouth must stay clean to help healing. You can remove plaque on the surrounding teeth with a cotton swab “Q-TIPS”. After 24 to 48 hours, it is recommended to rinse the mouth with warm water and salt.

FOOD
Avoid eating foods that are too hard, too hot or too spicy. Proper nutrition will promote healing. Eat nutritious, but soft foods, and do not eat on the side of the surgery site.

As easy as 1-2-3; Just follow these steps:

  • If your teeth are sensitive when exposed to hot or cold, it would be best to do a fluoride treatment 2 to 3 weeks before starting the whitening treatment. Simply place the fluoride gel (bottle provided by the dentist if necessary) in the trays and soak your teeth for 5 minutes in the morning and 5 minutes at night to desensitize your teeth. Make sure not to eat or drink for 30 minutes after this treatment.
  • When you are ready to start your whitening treatment, make sure to thoroughly brush your teeth and floss so the whitening gel is in contact with your teeth.
  • Apply the whitening gel in the trays as demonstrated by your hygienist. It is useless to put a large quantity, you will not get faster results, the gel will overflow, and you increase the risk of damaging the soft tissues.
  • It is absolutely contraindicated to smoke, eat or drink while wearing the trays. Moreover, it would be best not to smoke during the period when you do the bleaching. Avoid any food or drink that might stain your teeth (such as coffee, tea, red wine, brown soft drinks, etc…) and this until at least 1 week after the end of your treatment.
  • It is recommended to wear the whitening trays for at least 4 to 5 hours straight.
  • When removing your trays, wait 30 minutes before brushing your teeth, eating or drinking. You can rinse your mouth with water. Use your toothbrush and water to clean your trays and put them back in your open case so they can dry in the open.
  • You will get better results if you do your treatments within short time intervals. On the other hand, if you have sensitive teeth, you can:
    • Apply the fluoride gel treatment for 5 minutes 30 minutes before the whitening treatments – OR –
    • Space out your treatments by one or two days – OR –
    • In the case of persistent tooth sensitivity, discontinue treatment and contact your dentist.
  • The normal duration of a whitening treatment is 2 to 3 weeks, in some cases, a longer treatment may be required.
  • Results will vary from patient to patient and depends on many factors: the cause of coloration, the teeth’s porosity and the patient’s lifestyle, etc.

After the Zoom whitening treatment, you must keep the trays containing the desensitizing gel – (Relief ACP) in your mouth for at least 30 minutes.

  • Do not smoke or eat any food that will alter the colour of your teeth (coffee, tea, red wine, etc.) in the 2 hours following your treatment.
  • If you experience sensitivity in the following hours, do not hesitate to take ADVIL or TYLENOL.
  • 24 hours after your treatment, you can start using the trays for the home whitening treatment– proceed as explained by your dentist or hygienist.
  • BEFORE you apply the whitening treatment it is important to thoroughly brush your teeth and floss.
  • In case of gel overflow, use a cotton swab (Q-Tips) to remove any excess and to avoid gum irritation.
  • Keep the teeth whitening gel in your mouth for 30 minutes.
